Is Plastic Surgery Permanent?

Plastic surgery is a big decision. Although each experience is unique, the results of common procedures are relatively predictable. Learn what to expect so you can make informed choices.

How Long Do Breast, Body, and Facial Surgeries Last?

The results of plastic surgery on the breast, body, and face may last up to 20 years (or more), but there are no strict rules or limits.

Breast Augmentation

A breast augmentation isn’t permanent (as breast implants may need to be exchanged at some point), but the ideal time for a revision surgery is different for everyone.

Silicone and saline implants are FDA-approved for 10 to 20 years, but they can last longer. The longevity of breast augmentation depends on several factors, including the type of implants, surgical techniques, individual physiology, pregnancy, and weight gain or loss.

If you experience a complication with your implant or would like to change the aesthetics of your augmented breasts, a breast explantation surgery or a breast revision is performed to restore health and cosmetic appearance.

Liposuction

Our bodies have a limited number of fat cells. Fat cells grow or shrink as we gain and lose weight, but the number of cells remains the same. Any fat cells removed via a liposuction procedure are gone for good, but fat cells left behind in treated areas (and in other areas of the body) can still expand.

A healthy diet and exercise help maintain and enhance your liposuction results.

Facelift Surgery

A facelift can achieve stunning results and a youthful appearance that lasts approximately 10 to 20 years (or more depending on your physiology and level of post-surgical care).

Several factors, including genetics, age, and surgical technique, influence results. As a general rule, your facelift results last longer after more invasive facelift techniques.

Laser and injectable treatments may preserve facelift results for longer intervals. You can learn more about the non-surgical treatments we offer by visiting the Hochstein Medspa.

What Plastic Surgery Procedures Are Considered Permanent?

Plastic surgery techniques designed for the ears, nose, and chin can provide lifetime results unless you choose alterations in the future.

Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

A rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose. This procedure is frequently chosen for aesthetic reasons. However, a septoplasty, a subtype of rhinoplasty, reshapes deviated septums that may cause breathing difficulties.

It can take up to one to two years for the nose to develop its final shape after rhinoplasty, but long-term results are permanent.

Chin Implant Surgery

A chin implant strengthens receding chins and enhances contours around the neck and jawline. Strong, durable chin implants create a more balanced facial structure with permanently redefined contours.

Otoplasty (Ear Pinning Surgery)

An otoplasty, or a cosmetic ear surgery, alters the position, shape, or size of the ears for adults and children.

Although slight changes may occur as children grow, your otoplasty results are permanent.

Can I Extend My Plastic Surgery Results?

Some daily habits may extend plastic surgery results.

  • Follow your surgeon’s instructions and attend follow-up appointments.
  • Avoid tanning beds and protect skin from sun damage with sunscreen.
  • Use a daily moisturizer and drink plenty of water to keep skin hydrated.
  • Don’t smoke, and drink alcohol in moderation.
