Desiring fuller, firmer, and rounded buttocks this summer?

There are two primary methods plastic surgeons use to enhance the size and shape of your buttocks. These are butt implants and fat transfer.

The butt augmentation procedure (with both implants and fat) has seen rapid rises in popularity in recent years. Over 40,000 people chose a buttock augmentation in 2020 — and that includes a period in which elective surgical procedures were not able to be performed.

Many questions are asked of anything that is popular, and they should be; for a butt augmentation, one of the primary questions asked is, “Is the procedure safe?”

There has been a lot of information and misinformation released over recent years about the safety of these procedures. While there is proof that complications have occurred with these surgical procedures, it is essential to have all the facts.

Both cosmetic surgery techniques are safe and effective when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Hochstein.

What Are the Risks Associated With Butt Implants?

Butt implants are made out of a solid silicone implant material that holds its shape and form — even under intense pressure. These implants are much more cohesive and firm than the implants used for breast augmentation. This firm consistency better matches natural gluteal tissue.

The techniques required for a butt implant are far more invasive than those needed for a fat transfer (a Brazilian Butt Lift). Therefore, additional surgical risks, like infection, prolonged wound healing, allergic reactions, excessive bleeding, and fluid formation, are present.

What Are the Risks Associated With a BBL?

A Brazillian Butt Lift (BBL) is a fat grafting procedure that enhances the size and shape of the buttocks using fat injections. This was widely seen as the safest and most effective method of buttock augmentation for many years because it is less invasive and does not present the same potential for allergic reactions (since your fat is used).

Unfortunately, there have been reported cases of Brazilian Butt Lifts going very wrong and having serious — and, sadly, even fatal — consequences.

The saddest part of many of these situations is that — in most cases — it could have been avoided. Complications with a BBL often come in the form of fat embolisms. Fat embolisms can develop when the fat is injected too deep or in the wrong location of the buttocks.

This wrong placement can allow the injected fat to get into the bloodstream and travel to the heart and other vital organs.

It is essential to note that most of the dangers associated with a Brazilian Butt Lift are caused by surgeons performing a BBL without proper training or experience. The rising popularity of the BBL has enticed many surgeons to perform this even when they have not been trained to do so.

For plastic surgeons trained in correct BBL techniques, a Brazilian Butt Lift remains a safe and effective method of enhancing the buttocks.

Your BBL procedure will be safe if you choose a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Hochstein. He has experience and expertise in performing successful BBLs.

Should I Get a Brazillian Butt Lift or Butt Implant?

Both butt implants and BBL fat injections are safe and effective ways to enhance your buttocks. You can learn more about the differences between the two procedures here

Most patients tend to choose a Brazilian Butt Lift to enhance their buttocks after thoroughly examining the risks and benefits. BBL has a low risk of complications when performed by a skilled plastic surgeon. Unlike butt implants, there is virtually no risk of rejection after a BBL procedure.

The BBL also has the extra advantage of requiring liposuction. This means BBL patients get to remove excess fat from one area while enhancing their buttocks in a two-for-one operation. You can look at the results of BBL procedures in our photo gallery.
