There are a lot of weird suggestions out there that claim to improve the appearance of your skin.

Toothpaste, watermelon skin, breast milk—you’ve probably seen or heard them all.

Unfortunately, while some of the things you find online might seem like game-changing life hacks, very few of them (and definitely not any of the three we mentioned) really do anything for the health of your skin.

But at some point, you might have also stumbled onto a blog or social media post that said radio waves (the same technology that lets you listen to music or send a text message) can help enrich the texture of your skin.

While it may at first sound just as far-fetched as the breast milk thing, radio waves are powered by radio frequency energy.

And, as it turns out, radio frequency energy can make some pretty remarkable improvements to your skin.

What Is Radio Frequency Energy?

Radio frequency energy is a form of electromagnetic energy that has been used for skin tightening since 2001.[1]

Since it was first put on the market, it has grown rapidly in popularity.[2]

Some people assume that the “radio” part of the word references a radio you would listen to music on.

While radio frequency is responsible for much of the audio and video broadcasting we are accustomed to, you can’t exactly stand next to a radio or anything else that emits radio waves and expect your skin to improve.

Radio frequency energy treatments (and other energy-based treatments such as ultrasound, laser, and light energy) are the second most considered dermatologic treatments among consumers, according to a 2019 study by the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery.[3]

What Are My Radio Frequency Treatment Options?

Depending on what you are trying to achieve, you have a couple different RF treatment options. Two of the most popular are the eMatrix and Lutronic® Genius™ RF Microneedling.

What Is an eMatrix Laser Treatment?

This is a radio frequency treatment for the face used to target wrinkles, scarring, acne, and other imperfections that can damage the tone and texture of the skin.

Unlike other treatments that achieve similar results, this is a non-laser sublative treatment

How Does the eMatrix Work?

The radio frequency energy that is delivered through the eMatrix heats deep layers of the skin.

This process stimulates the production of collagen, the most plentiful protein and one of the most important structural elements of the skin.[4]

There are four different types of collagen in the body that all do different jobs.

Most of them have something to do with the structural support of the body, but Type I, which makes up 90 percent of your body’s total collagen, is the one that provides structure to your skin.

The production of collagen begins to slow down as we age or as our skin becomes damaged by external factors like ultraviolet radiation, sugar, refined carbs, or smoking.[4]

The decrease of collagen in the skin is primarily responsible for poor skin texture, wrinkles, folds, hollow areas, and fine lines throughout the face.

Restoring the lost protein to your face also restores the fullness you have lost. This is why eMatrix is so popular: it directly addresses the root cause of textural problems in the face.

Fun fact: When you are making homemade stock for cooking, the reason you have to simmer the bones for so long is so this process releases stored collagen, which gives body and flavor to the stock.

How Much Does eMatrix Laser Treatment Cost?

An eMatrix laser treatment session costs $350. Most patients need two to three treatments spaced four to six weeks apart each to achieve the results they desire.

What Are the Potential Side Effects of the eMatrix?

One of the best aspects of a procedure like eMatrix is how minor the side effects are. The only main side effect is that the skin may be slightly irritated and red for two days following the procedure.

Other than that, there is not much else to worry about with an eMatrix treatment.

What Is a Lutronic® Genius™ Radio Frequency Microneedling Treatment?

If radio frequency energy is able to achieve great results on its own, the possibilities that open up when you combine that treatment with microneedling are almost endless.

Microneedling is a procedure where a small tool is used to puncture holes into the deep layers of the skin.

These “micro” lesions cause the body to increase collagen production for healing, making the face fuller and reversing fine lines and wrinkles.

Lutronic® Genius™ goes one step further in the collagen-boosting process.

When the needles are placed into the deeper layers of the skin, radio frequency energy is delivered directly into the tissue through the tips of the needles.

This prevents the machine from having to worry about penetrating through the upper layers of skin, providing a direct path to the targeted area.

This makes the Lutronic® Genius™ one of the best radio frequency treatments for skin tightening.

How Effective Is Radio Frequency and Microneedling Treatment?

While the results are not as drastic as surgical procedures that tighten sagging cheeks and jowls or elevate drooping eyebrows, both radio frequency and microneedling have been shown to improve skin tone and texture while tightening the tissues.[5]

What Areas Can the Lutronic® Genius™ Treat?

While the eMatrix system is designed to primarily target facial problems, the Lutronic® Genius™ can treat a variety of areas, including the:

  1. Neck
  2. Arms
  3. Face
  4. Abdomen
  5. Knees
  6. Thighs
  7. Underarms

How Much Does Lutronic® Genius™ Cost?

A typical Lutronic® Genius™ session costs $300 without RF and $900 with RF.

Most patients need a minimum of three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart to achieve the results they desire.
