Preparing for a Successful Surgery Before the Procedure

When planning for a cosmetic procedure, you may focus on cost, scarring, recovery, and other factors. Though it may be overlooked, you also need to prepare to ensure a smooth process and recovery.

Preparation is just as important as the other factors in surgical planning. This blog explores how to prepare for your surgery and your recovery.

Preparing for Cosmetic Surgery or Aesthetic Procedures

At your consultation, ask whether there are specific things you should prepare right before your cosmetic plastic surgery. You can prepare for any surgery with the following:

Prepare Your Skin

Before any surgery, you should properly cleanse your skin. The night before your surgery, cleanse your body in the shower with unscented Dial soap, if possible.

It’s also recommended to use Hibiclens (chlorhexidine) the evening before and the morning of your procedure, which helps reduce bacteria on the skin tissue. You can find it at most pharmacies.

After your surgery, cleanse with an unscented Dove soap and avoid scrubbing your incisions. Prepare this before your surgery so you can focus on resting rather than shopping for your recovery.

What to Wear

Preparing the right attire for your surgical procedure is also important to avoid straining your incisions.

Bring comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that buttons or zips in the front so that you can avoid lifting your arms overhead after surgery.

Slip-on shoes are also recommended for comfort and convenience.

Supplements for Healing

Supplements and vitamins can help healing during your recovery.

Before your surgery, begin taking Arnica Montana, and continue to take it for the first week after surgery to help minimize bruising and swelling.

Take collagen supplements and a daily multivitamin for at least 6 months after your surgery to support healing.

Eating plenty of protein and staying hydrated is important before and after surgery to give your body the nutrients it needs to recover.

A Few Additional Reminders for Cosmetic Procedures or Reconstructive Surgery

Before you leave for your surgery, set up a comfortable rest area where you will spend the first week. Leave your pain medications, water, entertainment, and anything else you will need for that week within easy reach.

Meal prepping is advised to avoid cooking during your recovery. We recommend nutritious, high-protein meals that are easy to digest.

After your surgery, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and care for you for the first 24 to 48 hours.

Before your surgery:

  • Avoid medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), fish oil, vitamin E, and other blood-thinning supplements. You can resume these two weeks post-op.
  • Quit smoking, vaping, nicotine products, or recreational drugs at least 30 days before and after the surgery.
  • Remove all jewelry (including nose rings), contact lenses, makeup, lotions, perfumes, and nail polish before your surgery.

If you have any questions about preparation for your surgery, ask Dr. Hochstein during your consultation.
