After significant weight loss, you may find yourself struggling with looser skin in your abdomen area. If you’re considering a tummy tuck surgery, you may be wondering how long the recovery is and how to prepare for it. Because a tummy tuck procedure is highly individualized, there is no definitive timeline.
Your real healing process depends on your health, anatomy, and how much work was done. However, most patients generally follow a similar timeline for recovery. This blog explores the week-by-week recovery period and what you may be experiencing throughout it.

Tummy Tuck Week by Week Recovery Period
Your tummy tuck recovery may be influenced by which tummy tuck you get: a mini tummy tuck, a full tummy tuck, or an extended tummy tuck.
Regardless, many patients follow a similar timeline. The following timeline can help you prepare for your own recovery process:
First 48 Hours
After your tummy tuck surgery, you must plan ahead to arrange for a ride home, as you will be unable to drive yourself. You should also get someone to help you around the house for the first 48 hours after surgery, especially if you have small children.
The first two days are most crucial for getting the proper rest you need. Take prescription pain medications as advised, and a nutrient-rich diet and hydration are important to help your body heal.
Week 1
The first week is when the peak of discomfort will occur. Dr. Hochstein will use a long-lasting anesthetic (Exparel) to help with pain management for the first few days.
You will be expected to remain bent at a 45-degree angle for at least seven to 10 days to avoid strain on your abdominal muscles and skin. You will also have drains placed on your incision sites to collect excess fluids, which you will have removed at a follow-up appointment. A compression garment must be worn for at least two weeks to support healing and minimize swelling.
Light walking within the first few days is encouraged to help with circulation and prevent blood clots, but regular exercise and activities cannot be resumed until cleared by Dr. Hochstein.
Week 2 to 3
By your second week, you should begin feeling more like yourself. You can begin straightening your posture and start light exercise, and work may be resumed with clearance from Dr. Hochstein. Continue to avoid heavy lifting and wear your compression garment. Your discomfort should be minimized, but bruising and swelling will remain.
Week 4 to 5
By weeks four and five, regular activities can usually be resumed. Strenuous activities should still be avoided until cleared by Dr. Hochstein, but your discomfort should be completely gone. Residual swelling may still be present, but will continue to settle.
Week 6 and Beyond
By week six, you may be able to return to strenuous exercise and activities. It’s important to get clearance before you resume these, as you will still be healing internally. Your final tummy tuck result may take several months to appear, and scarring will gradually fade.
Is the Healing Process Different if I Combine My Tummy Tuck With Other Procedures?
Tummy tuck surgery is popular to pair with other body contouring procedures, like liposuction or in a Mommy Makeover. Depending on which procedures you pair with it, your recovery may have different instructions and may have a longer duration. Dr. Hochstein will provide personalized postoperative instructions based on the procedures you have.
Cost will vary based on procedures. Dr. Hochstein offers financing options for qualifying patients. You can get your personal cost estimate at your consultation.
