While the recovery process varies among patients, most women follow a general timeline. This is dependent on you following your post-operative instructions carefully and attending your follow-up appointments.

Breast Augmentation Recovery Timeline

Though the recovery period may seem long, many patients find it quite manageable.

Breast augmentation week-to-week recovery can vary from person to person, but most generally experience the following timeline:

First 48 Hours

The first couple of days are crucial for getting ample rest.

During your first 24 to 48 hours after surgery, you will need transportation home and someone to stay with you. Your movement may be limited, and this will be the peak of discomfort. Anesthesia effects may persist for 24 hours post-operation. It’s important to drink fluids to help the body flush out the drugs used during surgery.

You will be sent home wrapped in a compression garment, most likely a supportive surgical bra, to minimize swelling, improve circulation, aid implant settlement, and promote healing. Pain medication will be provided to help with your discomfort, which you can wean off as the week progresses.

Week 1

During your first week, bruising, swelling, and discomfort will be the most prominent. You should get the most rest this week, but it is recommended to start doing light cardio and gentle movements, such as slow walks, once you can to improve blood circulation and help prevent blood clots from forming.

You should expect to avoid upper-body exercises, heavy lifting, or other strenuous activity for at least six weeks or until cleared by Dr. Hochstein. You should also avoid raising your arms above your head for the first week. If you think you may need to, get someone to help you until you can do it safely yourself. Your upper body should be elevated during sleep and rest.

If you were instructed to wear surgical drains, you may be cleared to have them removed around this time, depending on your healing progress.

Weeks 2 to 3

By the two-week mark, you should begin to feel like yourself. Discomfort will begin to subside, and most patients return to desk work and light exercise at this time. You should get your surgeon’s clearance before you return to normal routines, especially any form of strenuous exercise. Labor-intensive work should be put on hold until after week 3.

Most swelling and bruising will continue into these weeks, but will gradually decline.

Weeks 4 to 5

You should continue to wear your compression bra to help your breast implants settle into a more natural position. Even if you feel better, you are still internally healing. Most patients notice that their bruising and swelling may still be present.

You should begin applying scar creams to your incision sites to help with scar treatment. While scarring will occur, these creams will help minimize it considerably.

Week 6 and Beyond

After the four to six-week mark, most patients are cleared to return to all activities, except chest workouts. Bruising, swelling, and scarring of the breast tissue may take a few months up to a year to fully clear.

Follow-up appointments are important for a smooth recovery and achieving the best final results. If you experience any complications, contact your surgeon immediately.
