Boost Your Profile: How Chin Implants Can Improve Your Face

Humans are one of the only animals with a chin. Only elephants have something close to it, and even they don’t have anything like the bony protrusion that plays such a huge role in our appearance.

So it should come as no surprise that we take so much stock in what our chins look like. A chin that’s too large or too small tends to overshadow other facial features for an overall less attractive effect.

A chin augmentation surgery addresses these concerns to craft a chin that fits in beautifully with existing features.

High or Low Profile? Your Chin Says It For You

Strong, defined chins are characteristic of male strength, while a small or narrow chin brings a feminine air more to mind.

A jutting chin can convey an outspoken, jovial personality—think Jay Leno and his famous chin—but can be considered loud, pushy, and ultimately less attractive.

These before-and-after images show the difference chin implants can make in a woman's facial profile. Chin implants can make the chin look fuller and more contoured, balancing other facial features.

And no one, man or woman, seems to want a “weak” or undefined chin

The shape and size of your chin often convey something about your personality. Regardless of whether you’re an attention-seeker or tend to shy away from the spotlight, your chin may convey a much different  kind of personality.

How a Chin Implant Surgery Works

Chin augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that reshapes or enhances the size of the chin. It can involve the use of an implant along with moving and reshaping bones.

What Are Chin Implants Made Of?

Chin implants can be made of silicone or other material, such as Teflon. Dr. Hochstein uses silicone implants for chin augmentation surgery.

Procedure

Step 1: The patient is put on general anesthesia before Dr. Hochstein makes a small incision beneath the chin, creating a “pocket” between the chin bone and facial muscles.

Step 2: The silicone chin implant is carefully placed inside to fit with the patient’s existing facial features and desired goals.

Step 3: Once the implant is inserted and put into place, Dr. Hochstein closes the incision using sutures.

The entire procedure typically takes about an hour to complete.

After Surgery: Chin Implants Recovery

It will take a few weeks to recover fully from chin implant surgery. There will be swelling, bruising, tightness on the skin, and minor pain right after the procedure.

This before-and-after image set shows how chin implants lead to an overall more defined appearance. By shaping and contouring the chin, the rest of the face looks younger and better balanced.

Dr. Hochstein will provide instructions on how to care for the surgical site, which might include:

  • Laying or sitting with your head in an upright, elevated position
  • Keeping your chin taped with a surgical dressing
  • Using ice compresses to relieve discomfort
  • Avoiding strenuous activities
  • Temporarily eating a special diet
  • Taking prescribed pain medication as needed

Most patients should be able to go back to work within one week after chin implant surgery.

Chin Implant Results

Chin implant surgery is designed to permanently change how your chin looks. Patients can expect a fuller, better-contoured chin that’s immediately noticeable as the area heals.

Your chin will now fit in better with existing facial features and provide the balance your face was missing before. Incisions are made under the chin, making scars almost non-existent.

How Much Do Chin Implants Cost?

The cost of your chin implant will be between $3,500 and $4,500 on average, but it is important to remember that this can vary based on many different factors.

Dr. Hochstein will determine the final price based on your unique patient needs and concerns.
