Mommy Makeover Recovery Process by Week

Because Mommy Makeover surgery is so customized, your recovery depends on which procedures you receive (breast surgery, tummy tuck, etc.) and how many you get. While there is no set recovery timeline, most patients follow a similar one to the following:

First 48 Hours

Plan for someone to take you home and help you for the first 48 hours of your recovery period. A Mommy Makeover is done under general anesthesia, meaning you won’t be able to take yourself home after.

These first couple of days post-operation are the most crucial to your full recovery. You will be sent home wearing compression garments that you need to wear throughout your recovery. These help to reduce swelling, help circulation, and prevent blood clots.

Week 1

Discomfort, bruising, and significant swelling will peak in the first few days of your recovery, but moderate pain can be managed with pain medication. Rest, proper hydration, and a healthy diet are important during this time. Don’t do anything that can potentially cause complications with your incision sites, like heavy lifting or moving too harshly.

It’s recommended to prepare food and a comfortable place to rest before your surgery so you don’t risk unnecessary movement. Many patients move away from prescribed pain medications by the end of the first week.

You may also engage in light walking when you can to support healing and promote circulation.

Week 2 to 3

Bruising and swelling will begin to lessen by weeks two and three. Most patients are able to completely forego pain medications at this point. Light activities can usually be resumed, and those who work desk jobs tend to return at this time. Those who work more labor-intensive, physically demanding jobs are advised to wait a bit longer before returning to work.

Week 4 to 5

This is when most Mommy Makeover patients feel comfortable returning back to normal activities and light exercise. While some bruising and swelling may persist, you should feel like yourself again. While all light activities are cleared by this time, avoid strenuous exercise until your surgeon clears you.

Week 6 and Beyond

At this point, most women are cleared to resume all activities. While your final results may take a few months to show, you may begin to really see your new figure at this point. Scars will fade more over the next few months. It’s important to attend any follow-up appointments you may have to ensure a smooth recovery.
