Should I Get Liposuction or CoolSculpting®?

Posted July 19, 2019 in Coolsculpting, Liposuction

Liposuction and CoolSculpting® are cosmetic procedures designed to eliminate excess fat on the body that is too stubborn to target through diet and exercise alone.

While both procedures can produce slimming results to contour the body, the methods by which they achieve that goal are very different from one another. The option best suited to provide you with the results you desire will depend on your current body weight and the expectations you have for the procedure.

What Can Liposuction Do for Me?

Liposuction (also referred to as lipoplasty) is a fat removal procedure that is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. This procedure eliminates fat cells to provide a better contour to the body. Depending on the amount of correction needed, your procedure can be performed using any of the following techniques:

  • Wet liposuction
  • Super-wet liposuction
  • Tumescent liposuction
  • Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction
  • Power-assisted liposuction
  • Vaser®-assisted liposuction.

What Are the Pros?

Liposuction can target stubborn fat in large sections of the treatment area, such as the buttocks, midsection, and thighs. This treatment can also produce long-lasting results to create a slimming and toned appearance.

If you struggle with loose skin and excess fat, you can combine your procedure with a tummy tuck surgery. Liposuction can also be used to harvest fat for fat transfer to enhance another section of your body.

What Are the Cons?

Because liposuction is an intensive surgical procedure, this means that you will have to endure a recovery period. Most patients can typically return to their normal activities within one week or unless instructed otherwise by their surgeon. Swelling and bruising may also not dissipate until after a few weeks/months.

What Can CoolSculpting® Do for Me?

CoolSculpting® is a non-surgical, fat-freezing procedure that can be used on the lower back, thighs, hips, and neck. It is also used for treating small areas of the body like the love handles or muffin tops.

What Are the Pros?

CoolSculpting® is an excellent option to treat smaller fatty deposits and the best choice for patients who want to avoid surgery. This treatment also does not require any downtime, and patients can return to their daily activities immediately after the procedure.

What Are the Cons?

Because CoolSculpting® removes less fat per treatment, you may need several sessions to get the results you want.

Overall, the choice of which treatment is best for you will depend on how you feel, what issues you wish to treat, and how much fat you want to remove.
