LABIA REJUVENATION | OTOPLASTY |

LABIA REJUVENATION

A new technique has been developed to reduce the labia minora yet maintain the normal labial edge and color. Labia minora enlargement can be congenital or acquired by chronic irritation, exogenous androgenic hormones, and stretching with weights. This can cause inflammation, poor hygiene, interference with sexual intercourse, or intermittent urinary self-catheterization.

BlankAesthetically, asymmetrical or enlarged labia minora causes self-consciousness sexually and when the subject wears tight pants. Previously labia minora reduction was performed by amputation of the protuberant segment and over sewing the edge. Now, rather than amputation, a wedge of protuberant labial tissue is excised and the labial edges are reapproximated.

Although aesthetic surgery of the female genitalia has not been significant interest among physicians, women have become more aware of differences in genital appearance owing to publication of nude pictures in magazines and nude presentation in movies. If the labia minora are enlarged or unequal in size, some women harbor secret feelings of being deformed or abnormal, causing embarrassment and loss of self-esteem. Labia minora protruding past the labia majora are considered aesthetically unacceptable to these women.

Labia minora reduction is performed easily in about 1 hour by excising wedges of protuberant tissue, and achieves excellent aesthetic results and low complication rates. Care must be taken not to excise too much labia in an anterior-posterior position to avoid tightening of the introitus. The fourchette must not be violated. A careful closure and reapproximation will result in natural-looking labia minora with no obvious surgical sequelae. Aesthetic labia minora reduction need not be withheld from women, as normal genital appearance greatly enhances self-esteem. This new procedure is an improvement over the precious technique of amputation and closure.

Introduction

Every woman is constructed slightly differently. It is not uncommon for a woman to feel dissatisfied with her labia minora (inner lips of the external genitalia), especially if they are particularly long. In many cases women are just not happy with parts of their genitalia. This can be embarrassing, uncomfortable and can even lead to sexual dissatisfaction or difficulty. Women with exceptionally long or unequal lengths of the labia minora can have them aesthetically reshaped.

What does the surgery involve?

The procedure is performed in office, usually under general anesthetic and is done in one of two ways. Your surgeon will trim the inner folds so that they no longer protrude - either by reducing the edges of the labia, or by snipping out a 'V' shape wedge of tissue. Then the remaining edges are carefully sewn back together taking care to obtain as natural a result as possible, by maintaining the natural anatomy.

How long does the surgery take?

Surgery is carried out under general anesthetic or local anesthetic with sedation and will take around a 1 hour. Patients can go home the same day as the operation.

What will happen in the recovery period?

After surgery, women may experience some mild discomfort and swelling, which usually disappears completely after 1-2 weeks. The labial incisions usually heal quickly and are rarely noticeable. After the procedure you will wear a panty liner. The sutures dissolve so there is no need for physical removal. You are advised to avoid vigorous exercise for 3 weeks and vaginal intercourse for 6 weeks. A daily bath or gentle shower ensures quick healing which is usually complete within two weeks. Follow up visits will be scheduled to check on your progress.

What is the recovery time?

This will depend on the individual patient however recovery is quite rapid - a week after surgery you should be able to return to work, and be able to resume normal activity after 2-3 weeks.

What can I expect from the surgery?

You have to be realistic in your expectations. In most cases the surgery is virtually undetectable after complete healing and patients are extremely pleased with the final results.

OTOPLASTY

The otoplasty procedure varies with every patient and their degree of ear deformity. The operation is undertaken in an outpatient setting under general or local anesthesia with sedation. During the operation, an incision is made behind the ear to hide any obvious marks of surgical intervention. Multiple, strategically placed, sutures are placed to shape the cartilage into normal folds, which were missing pre-operatively The cartilage is then reshaped using techniques of scoring, suturing, limited removal or combinations of the three.

The reshaped framework is then repositioned to achieve the best balance with the opposite side and to reduce excessive projection. The skin is re-draped, any excess skin is removed, and the incision behind the ear is closed. A gentle pressure dressing is placed to prevent excessive fluid accumulation beneath the skin.

To reduce the swelling or collection of fluid beneath the skin, you will have a dressing on your head to put gentle pressure on your ears and maintain their new position. After about t two or three days, the dressing will be removed .All of your incisions will be carefully closed with stitches. Some of the suture will dissolve while other sutures will require removal in 7 to 10 days. You'll be able to wash your hair as soon as your head dressing is removed on the second or third day after surgery.

Most patients experience very little pain following their procedure. There will be slight discomfort or soreness- mostly when you bump or move your ears. This will be for about a week or two. You'll notice some swelling in the ears for two to three weeks following surgery. Most bruising will resolve in the first week or two. During this time, you can cover your ears with your hair.
