At the hands of a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon, breast augmentation surgery is a safe and effective procedure that can boost a woman’s confidence by giving her the firmer, fuller breasts she desires. However, changes and complications can occur, even in the face of proper planning and execution of the procedure. These changes can stem from natural changes in the breast tissue caused by weight loss or gain, childbirth, or breastfeeding. In addition, complications, such as capsular contracture or migration of the implant, can also occur. Other times, a patient is simply dissatisfied with their initial implant size, shape, or placement and would like to consider revision surgery.
Leonard M. Hochstein, M.D., a board certified breast surgery specialist, has many years of experience with breast revision in Miami, correcting unfavorable breast enlargement results done elsewhere. During an initial consultation, Dr. Hochstein will examine each woman’s individual situation in order to help determine the best way to correct her specific problem and provide optimal results. Together, Dr. Hochstein and the patient will discuss the following:
- Details of the prior breast augmentation procedure
- Health history
- Expectations for breast revision surgery
- Breast revision procedure details
By looking at breast augmentation photos of Miami patients, you may get a better concept of what this surgical rejuvenation procedure can do for you. Be sure to view breast revision before and after photos of Dr. Hochstein’s previous patients in his photo gallery.

The Surgery: Implant Removal or Implant Removal and Replacement

Breast Implant Removal
Old implants are removed through an incision made either under the breast or around the nipple. Scar tissue that has developed around the implant (which is common) may also need to be removed. Drainage tubes will be inserted to collect any blood or fluid that will accumulate in the implant pockets. The skin is then closed with sutures, and the chest will be wrapped tightly so the implant pocket will close. Drainage tubes are usually removed within a week.

Breast Implant Removal and Replacement
Patients who seek to replace their old implants will undergo a breast implant removal, and the implant will be replaced either during the implant removal procedure or during a separate procedure at a later date. If the capsule that formed around the previous implants needs to be adjusted, it will either be sutured to become smaller, or temporary implant sizers will be placed into the pocket and inflated. Once the correct size is achieved, they will be replaced with the actual implants. Incisions are then closed with sutures.
Potential Complications
As with all surgical procedures, there are some risks associated with breast revision surgery. These include, but are not limited to, the following: reactions to anesthesia, blood accumulation, changes in nipple or breast sensation, capsular contracture, and/or implant deflation. During the initial consultation, Dr. Hochstein will answer any questions and make sure the patient fully understands all possible complications involved with the surgery.
Recovery
As with any surgery, recovery time with breast revision surgery will vary from patient to patient. In most cases, breast revision recovery time usually lasts longer than the initial breast augmentation recovery time. The patient should plan to be away from work and routine commitments for 7 to 10 days. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least two weeks, and the patient should avoid immersing breasts under water in a tub, pool, or spa for at least 4 weeks. Discoloration and swelling are normal and should completely resolve within a month. Any stitches that have not dissolved will be removed about a week after surgery.
Results
After a breast revision in Miami, the problems or concerns the patient experienced with the previous implants should be corrected. Results will be immediately visible and should improve as the swelling subsides. The patient should note that Miami breast revision surgery does not stop the signs of aging. As time passes, the skin may sag and eventually alter the size and shape of the breast. Weight loss or gain, as well as the weight of the implant used, can have an effect on the appearance of the breasts over time. However, results with this procedure are long-lasting.
To ensure that optimum results are maintained with the procedure, Florida breast revision specialist Dr. Hochstein makes it a priority to follow up with his patients’ progress for an extended period of time.
